HENSTRIDGE AIRFIELD WEBCAM

The link to the airfield webcam is at the foot of this page, but please read these words first to make the most of the image
The webcam is presently a very basic arrangement.  When funds & my grasp of the technology permit, I will upgrade the image, but meanwhile you will just have to make the best of it.  Hopefully, as you become familiar with the image, it will become a useful tool.
The camera is at the clubhouse and looks out over the signal square and the threshold of runway 25 at the village of Kington Magna GR7623.  Note that the village is an avoid area.
The signal square in the foreground of the picture below is set out to indicate runway 25 in use.  When runway 07 is in use, the crossbar of the T will face away from the camera.
The image should never be more than four or five minutes old and the caption on the image shows the time the image was taken and also the surface wind indicated at that time of capture.  Therefore the webcam image, together with the ‘barometer’ indication from the weather page (the pressure shown is QFE, add 6mb for QNH) will provide you with airfield information for your arrival, should the radio not be manned for any reason.

THE INFORMATION PROVIDED BY THE AIRFIELD WEATHER STATION AND WEB CAM IMAGE IS UNOFFICIAL, AND IS NOT INTENDED TO REPLACE THE AVIATION WEATHER FORECASTS YOU WOULD NORMALLY CONSULT PRIOR TO FLIGHT.
WHAT YOU SEE:
The ridgeline behind the village is approx 250’ above the runway 25 threshold.  Some distances to identifiable points are shown in the picture below.  I hope to improve the quality of this image before long.
Note that all the features shown are much clearer in bright sunlight, and in the afternoon. A grainy image, although the picture might seem to indicate decent weather, probably suggests that there is more cloud around the airfield than is shown in the picture.
The image below was captured on a CAVOK day on a rather better camera than the web cam presently in use.  As weather conditions deteriorate, so does the quality of the image.
If, as below, you can see the ridge clearly defined from right to left, then there is very little doubt that the weather is acceptable.  If the image becomes grainy & the ridge less distinct, then the conditions are progressively less & less good until, if you cannot see the tall willow 300m from the 25 threshold (see below), then stay at home & put up some shelves!  Some words about the landmarks indicated, together with comments are shown below the picture.

ALWAYS MAKE SURE THAT YOU CHECK THE DATE/TIME SHOWN ON THE LIVE IMAGE
Computers can fail & you wouldn't want to make your decision to fly based on out of date information.

THE AREAS INDICATED ABOVE ARE AS FOLLOWS:
On the left:    Bushy top trees - 4500m.  These trees are on the skyline in a saddle on the ridge.  The white gable ends of houses near the field give you a line leading to the trees.  If the trees are clear to see, then the viz is probably 9999, just visible, then 4500m, not visible then the weather is marginal.
Centre:    White House - 3000m.    The most useful landmark, some 3000m from and just over 200' above the threshold of runway 25.  In very good visibility, both the house and the adjacent church are clearly visible, and always more so in the afternoon with the sun behind the camera.  As the house & church become less distinct, so you can assume that conditions are more overcast.
Centre right:    Tall willow tree.  300m from the threshold to runway 25, slightly north of the approach path.
Second from right:    Lone tree on the skyline.  Normally only visible on a good day.
On the Right:
Coking Farm - 1500m.  Coking farm is just to the north of the approach to runway 25, & about 1.5km from the threshold.
PLEASE TREAT KINGTON MAGNA AND COKING FARM  AS AVOID AREAS.
